Elizabeth Edwards Leaves Everything to Her Children, Nothing to John

Six days before she died of breast cancer, Elizabeth Edwards signed a last will and testament leaving everything she owned to her three children. Her eldest daughter, 28-year-old lawyer Cate Edwards, was named executor of her late mother's estate. All of Elizabeth's possessions -- "furniture, furnishings, household goods, jewelry, china, silverware and personal effects and any automobiles," according to People -- will be divided among Cate, Emma Claire, 12, and Jack, 10. Elizabeth did not leave anything to her estranged husband, former Senator and Presidential candidate John Edwards. The will, in fact, does not even mention him.

The will also contains an article appointing Cate Edwards as the legal guardian for her siblings, should Elizabeth be the only surviving parent at the time of her death. Since that wasn't the case, John -- who is currently living in the family home -- is now the legal guardian of his youngest children. However, the fact that she named Cate as guardian in her will implies that Elizabeth may have wanted her eldest to raise the other Edwards kids. (There had already been rumors to that effect, since Elizabeth reportedly wanted her children kept away from John's mistress Rielle Hunter.)

And speaking of John: hours after Elizabeth's will was made public, The National Enquirer reported that John Edwards has proposed to Rielle Hunter. The tabloid, which originally broke the story of John Edwards' affair and love child with Hunter, claims that the couple is already planning their wedding. Of course, that may have been the plan all along: John had reportedly told Rielle that they'd "be together when Elizabeth is gone." Ugh -- those two horrible people deserve each other.

The Edwards children, however, do not deserve to be caught in the middle of the John-and-Rielle insanity (nor does their young daughter Quinn, but she's basically stuck with it). If John and Rielle insist on getting married, we pray that they will do it quietly, and leave the Edwards kids out of it. And if Cate is prepared to take custody of her siblings? That may not be a bad idea -- especially if that's what her mother wanted.
