The 82nd Annual Academy Awards (which will be hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway) may not be until March 7. But the race for Oscar gold is off and running!
The National Board of Review, which is often a good barometer for which movies will get Oscar love, announced their picks for the best films and performances of 2010. This comes just two days after the nods for another Oscar indicator, the Independent Spirit Awards, were announced.
At the top of the NBoR heap was the critical and box office fave The Social Network. The film was named one of the ten best of the year and director David Fincher, writer Aaron Sorkin, and lead star Jesse Eisenberg all walked away with accolades (for best director, original screenplay and actor, respectively).
The Social Network grabbed the most wins from the NBoR, but there were plenty of other notable flicks nipping at its heels. Ben Affleck's gritty crime drama The Town made the top ten, and the film's cast (which includes Affleck, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively) bested The Social Network gang with their title of best ensemble cast.
What's shaping up to be an already rather handsome Oscar race got even more so as Christian Bale was named best supporting actor (for his work in the upcoming drama The Fighter) and the double dose of Leonardo DiCaprio (as both of his 2010 films, Inception and Shutter Island, landed in the National Board's top ten.)
Other notable top ten movies included the animated follow-up Toy Story 3 and Matt Damon's spiritual drama Hereafter.
The National Board also gave kudos to the women who made a major impact in cinema, including up-and-coming star Jennifer Lawrence (who won breakthrough performance for her stunning work in Winter's Bone) and Sofia Coppola (who was given Special Filmmaking Achievement Award for her film Somewhere).
Entertainment Weekly mentioned some of the notable movies left off the National Board's list, including some of the year's best reviewed flicks such as The Kids Are All Right, Black Swan and 127 Hours. But, don't be surprised to see those flicks join the front of the pack right alongside The Social Network as we head closer to awards season!
